I don’t really believe that. Social media is a big part of the web as the way it is today, but people are still overwhelming using google to find things other than people. Retail and service business still need to be SEO optimized to increase hits and business. Sure having a twitter account would help with getting your name out there, but its not the end all be all.

SEO is not dead. SEO the old fashion way is dead.
The larger your presence (more HTML pages). the better you will look in the eyes of the search engines.
That’s why websites like facebook, myspace, twitter create one profile page for each user. Hence, more users more pages.

It is actually very very simple!
(at least for the people that made the Internet what it is today)

having a few million pages in your website will help also!
Just following people in social networks will not make you a source for people to come to.
I guess it all depends on how close your would like to be to the source?
Today source is: GOOGLE!
